HONOLULU--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 2017-- Bank of Hawaii announces the following appointments and promotions, effective March 1:

• Kent T. Lucien, vice chair, currently Bank of Hawaii’s chief financial officer, will become chief strategy officer.
• Dean Y. Shigemura, senior executive vice president, will be promoted from controller to chief financial officer, succeeding Kent T. Lucien.
• Brent T. Flygar, senior vice president, will be promoted from financial reporting manager and director of corporate tax to controller and principal accounting officer, succeeding Dean Y. Shigemura.

As chief strategy officer, Kent T. Lucien, 63, will assist in developing and executing the bank’s key strategic initiatives, including the “Branch of Tomorrow” modernization project and leveraging information and technology to reshape the delivery of banking services, products and experiences with a customer focus. He will continue to oversee the bank’s Corporate Facilities and Real Estate Department.

Prior to joining Bank of Hawaii as a member of its Managing Committee as vice chair and chief financial officer in 2008, he served on the bank’s board of directors from 2006.

Lucien’s previous experience includes serving as chief executive officer of operations and chief financial officer at C. Brewer & Co. Ltd., a Hawaii corporation with operations in agriculture, food processing, industrial services and real estate.

Lucien previously served on the board of Wailuku Water Co. and Maui Land & Pineapple Inc., where he served as Audit Committee Chair. Lucien received his bachelor’s degree from Occidental College and an MBA from Stanford University.

As chief financial officer, Dean Y. Shigemura, 53, will supervise the bank’s Treasury, Financial Reporting and Investor Relations departments. Shigemura has been a member of Bank of Hawaii’s Managing Committee since 2008.

Shigemura began his career at Bank of Hawaii in 1999 as vice president and investments officer. He was promoted to senior vice president in 2002, and was named executive vice president and bank treasurer the following year. In 2014, Shigemura was promoted to controller.

Prior to Bank of Hawaii, he worked as vice president and financial analyst for The Shidler Group. A graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Shigemura holds a master’s degree in finance and management. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle. In 2012, he graduated from Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program, and also holds a Certified Public Accountant designation in the state of Hawaii. Shigemura is currently on the board of directors of the Diamond Head Theatre.

As controller and principal accounting officer, Brent T. Flygar, 49, will supervise the bank’s financial accounting and reporting, regulatory reporting, corporate taxation and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.

Prior to joining Bank of Hawaii in 2009, he served 11 years as a senior manager in the tax department of Ernst & Young LLP in Las Vegas, Nev. and Los Angeles, Calif.

Flygar holds a master’s degree in taxation from Golden Gate University in Los Angeles, a bachelor’s degree in accounting from California State University, Fullerton, and holds a Certified Public Accountant designation in the state of California. Flygar serves on the board of directors for Tax Foundation of Hawaii.
