Mark A. Burak

Mark A. Burak’s career in accounting, finance and strategic planning for major banks brings a high level of sophistication to board discussions on a wide range of financial, strategic planning and operating matters. A certified public accountant, he joined the BOH board as a director in 2009, and previously served as a consultant to the bank helping to formulate our longer term strategy and business performance evaluation process. His substantial knowledge of our business, professional experience and educational background make him well qualified to serve on the board and as chair of the Audit & Risk Committee.

After 30+ years at Bank of America, Mr. Burak retired as executive vice president for Planning, Analysis and Performance Measurement. He previously held various management, accounting and finance positions at Bank of America and the former Continental Illinois National Bank.

He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration, majoring in public accounting, from Loyola University of Chicago, and his M.B.A. in finance from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

Mr. Burak serves on the Board of Trustees of the Mānoa Heritage Center and the Honolulu Museum of Art where he also served as Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance Committee before moving to emeritus trustee status in 2020. He served as Interim Director from 2019 to early 2020 while an international search was conducted for a new permanent Director.

Mr. Burak is a member of Financial Executives International, having served on several local chapter boards and as president of the San Francisco Chapter, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
